LA street work ruptures natural gas line

Crews have stopped the flow of natural gas coming from a ruptured line in the San Fernando Valley and evacuations have been lifted for several nearby businesses.
Southern California Gas Company spokeswoman Denise King says a contractor working for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power damaged the 3-inch-diameter natural gas line in North Hollywood Monday morning.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Erik Scott says six nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

Traffic was routed away and about 900 students at a school sheltered in place.

King says a backhoe struck the gas line while a worker was removing pavement. She says utility crews crimped the line and stopped the flow of gas but are still working to make permanent repairs. No gas service was lost.
