Natural Gas Futures Open Interest Rises to Record, CME Says


Natural gas futures open interest rose to a record yesterday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, according to Chris Grams, a spokesman for CME Group Inc. (CME), which owns the Nymex.

The number of contracts outstanding reached 992,434, breaking the previous record of 983,802 set on April 18, Grams said in an e-mail.

Natural gas for May delivery fell 0.5 cent to $4.693 per million British thermal units yesterday on the exchange. Prices dropped 2.3 cents, or 0.5 percent, today to $4.67. Gas futures have climbed 6 percent this year.
